How Do I…

Request a Retirement Estimate?

As members consider retirement, they need detailed information about what their benefit will look like under the various retirement options. TMRS provides these options to members in retirement estimates.

TMRS retirement estimates are available for each of the 7 available retirement options and any Partial Lump Sum Distribution amounts.

To request an estimate:

  • Online: Through MyTMRS on the website. You will need to register and sign in to your account to request basic retirement estimates (See 1). MyTMRS will store any estimates generated for 60 days .
  • By phone: Call our toll-free number (800.924.8677) and speak to someone in Member Services.
  • In writing: A signed, written request may be faxed to TMRS at (512) 476-5576 or mailed to PO Box 149153 Austin, TX 78714-9153. Include the following information:
    • Full name
    • Last four digits of your Social Security # or your TMRS ID #
    • Mailing Address and Phone #
    • The retirement date(s) you would like estimate(s) for.
    • Your signature in longhand
    • Date of request

Please note: The annuity projections are based on the information on file at the time the retirement estimate is generated. If you would like an estimate to be generated with special assumptions such as proportionate service (service with another Texas public retirement system), different beneficiary designations, salary changes, etc., please call TMRS to discuss your request.

The TMRS monthly payment plans are:

  1. Retiree Life Only Option — A benefit paid only for the life of the retired member with no provision for a survivor benefit.

  3. Retiree Life — 75% Survivor Benefit: A benefit payable for the life of the retired member, and a lifetime payable to a designated survivor equal to 75% of the retiree’s benefit payable on the retiree’s death.

Partial Lump Sum Distribution

You may choose to receive a partial lump sum payment from your member account when you retire. The lump sum payment is equal to the monthly payment of your Retiree Life Only option multiplied by your choice of 12, 24, or 36 and cannot exceed 75% of your member deposits and interest. The lump sum is then deducted from the total amount used to calculate your monthly payment, and a new, reduced monthly payment is determined.

The Partial Lump Sum Distribution is subject to income tax and possibly an additional 10% tax penalty at the time of payment (some exceptions may apply). You can roll over the partial lump sum payment into an IRA or other qualified plan to continue to defer any income tax payments.
