82nd Legislative Session Convened on January 11th
The Texas Legislature convened for its 82nd Regular Legislative Session on January 11, 2011. The Session will run for 140 days, adjourning at the end of May. House members elected Representative Joe Straus, (R-San Antonio) to his second term as Speaker of the Texas House. In the Senate, Senator Steve Ogden (R-Bryan) was elected President Pro-Tempore.
The next step in the process is for committees to be announced, which will likely occur near the end of January or the first part of February. As soon as committees are established, bills will begin being referred and heard. TRMS fund restructuring legislation has been filed in the Senate (SB 350) by Senator Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands). We anticipate that companion legislation will soon be filed in the House of Representatives.
